Graffiti & Street Art
How Graffiti Originated
Graffiti & Street art has its origins in 1970s New York and Philadelphia when young people began to use spray paint and other materials to create images on buildings and on the sides of subway trains. These young people were also inspired to do this by the current day hip hop culture.
The man who started it all.
Darryl McCray, also known as Cornbread is an American graffiti writer from Philadelphia. He is widely considered the world's first modern graffiti artist. McCray was raised in Brewerytown, a neighborhood of North Philadelphia. The story behind what motivated Darryl to start all of this is a inspiring love tale. he developed a crush on a girl named Cynthia Custuss. To win her attention, he wrote "Cornbread Loves Cynthia" all over North Philadelphia. After winning over Cynthia, he continued tagging North Philadelphia.

HIP HOP'S IMPACT ON STREET ART
About ten years after its inception around 1970, graffiti culture started to be linked with hip-hop, a concept coined by the media to facilitate the commercialisation of graffiti and other contemporary cultures. This artificial link is still seen in the media, and therefore also in the mainstream view of graffiti.
